Australian pharmacists united in action for healthier communities

19 Sep 2022

Pharmacy united in action for a healthier world is the theme of this year’s World Pharmacists Day on 25 September 2022. The theme highlights the important role of pharmacists in improving the health of people around the world.

Keypoints
  • World Pharmacists Day on 25 September 2022 highlights the work of pharmacists globally in creating a healthier world.
  • The Pharmacy Board of Australia regulates Australia’s more than 35,000 registered pharmacists.
  • Board Chair Brett Simmonds congratulates pharmacists on their efforts over the past year, delivering essential healthcare services in diverse settings across the country.

On behalf of the Pharmacy Board of Australia1  I would like to acknowledge the significant efforts of all pharmacists across the country in providing essential healthcare services in various settings and in often challenging circumstances.

Australian pharmacists have supported healthcare systems and communities during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters such as floods.

In diverse roles, pharmacists have contributed to ensuring medications are used safely and appropriately during clinical trials and research experiments and have been involved in managing drug shortages, developing treatment protocols, the exploration of new drugs and antimicrobial stewardship. In the community they have provided medication management advice to patients, carers and healthcare practitioners.

World Pharmacists Day is an initiative of the International Pharmaceutical Federation, which in 2022 is highlighting the role of pharmacists in meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) – Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages.

I acknowledge Australian pharmacists who, through their wide-ranging work, are contributing to the targets of this goal, which include:

  • fighting communicable diseases
  • reducing mortality from noncommunicable disease and promoting mental health
  • preventing and treating substance abuse
  • reducing road injuries and deaths
  • providing universal access to sexual and reproductive care, family planning and education, and
  • supporting research, development and universal access to affordable vaccines and medicines.

On behalf of the Board, which regulates Australia’s 35,3682  pharmacists, I would like to thank all pharmacists for the difference they make to the current and future health of people in Australian communities.
