National Board now accepting additional English language tests

26 Apr 2023

The National Boards who recognise the test pathway have agreed to accept additional English language tests to provide further flexibility to applicants applying for registration.

The following additional English language tests are now being accepted by relevant National Boards:

  • OET Computer Based Test (CBT), and
  • IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR).

The OET CBT is delivered on a computer in a testing venue with one element of the test delivered by a human interlocutor via video conferencing software.

The IELTS OSR allows eligible test takers to re-sit one component of the test within a 60-day period if all other components and certain requirements are met.

Applicants for registration should visit the test provider’s website directly to find out more about these tests. Information about test providers is available on the Ahpra website.

The addition of these tests aims to provide further flexibility to applicants while balancing our core role of protecting the public.

All other requirements in the relevant Board’s English language skills registration standard still apply.

The National Boards are currently reviewing the ELS standards which has included carrying out wide ranging consultation on any proposed changes. The review of the standards includes considering additional test modes.

As part of the review, National Boards will be carefully considering approaches of other similar regulators, available evidence and the details of the security arrangements in place.
